Superconnected Chapter 10: Our Superconnected Future

Can humans and manifestations of artificial intelligence develop genuine, meaningful relationships? Why/why not?

Artificial Intelligence is defined as the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. Artificial Intelligence is already here to a fairly high level but it still has a ways to go. The technology industry has been taking massive strides toward developing fully-functioning, human-like robots, otherwise known as humanoids. It all sounds like fairy tale or some made-up vision of the future but we are so close to creating these things.

With the current technology, it is not possible for humans to have meaningful relationships with artificial technology but that could change in the next 10 years or so. We already have robots capable of thinking, having conversations, translating languages, and doing physical tasks so all that is left is to allow them to feel and sense. Believe it or not, Elon Musk could soon have the digital data that we need from neurons firing in real human brains. One of his lesser-known companies has created an implantable interface that allows computers to read brain activity at the most in-depth level and vice versa. This allows us to understand the physical brain activity controlling and reacting to feelings and emotions. Once we understand all of this it can be digitally recreated to allow these humanoids to function like humans. At that point in time, yes, humans can have real relationships with artificial intelligence. Until then, there will remain an emotional divide between humans their robot counterparts.
